About a year ago I started this blog as a place to reflect on the music I encounter in my job as a music cataloguer. However, now I am finding a wish to expand this a bit into all things musical I encounter, whether it be in my day-to-day life or through work.
I have no idea how this will play itself out. Maybe I’ll include reviews of musically-themed movies or reflections on books about music. I’ll just go with the flow.
For those of you new to the blog, my background is definitely classically based. I started piano when I was 4 and viola when I was 10. Classical also tends to be the music I fall back to when I am stressed out or need to relax.
I tend to swing between being either really analytical or emotional when I look at music. The analytical bent comes from 3 years of music theory in high school and 2 years in college. The emotional bent comes from the way I instinctively respond to music.
In addition to classical piano, I’ve studied violin, viola, and jazz piano. I also had a short stint in public radio as a classical music radio announcer at WILL-FM and WUSB.
The title for this blog comes from a Baha’i quote about music and sums up what I believe to be the true purpose of music: to be a ladder for the soul, a way to reach what is divine and sacred within us.
Finally, I would love to hear from you. You can respond either through comments on this blog, or joining me on LinkedIn at http://ca.linkedin.com/in/jenlaibromley
